Stump Grinding in Columbia, MO
Once a tree is cut down, the stump left in the ground doesn't break down on its own for years — sometimes decades. Grinding takes the stump down several inches below soil level so the area can be mowed, replanted, or built over without the stump being a hazard or an eyesore. It's a separate job from tree removal and gets quoted separately.

- You had a tree removed and the stump is left sitting in the lawn
- An old stump is catching your mower blade every time you cut the grass

How It Works
Our Process for Stump Grinding
- 1
Check for utilities
Before any grinding, we confirm utility line locations if the stump is near areas where lines could run shallow. Hitting a line is a serious problem that a quick check prevents.
- 2
Clear the area
We remove rocks, debris, or anything near the stump that could become a projectile when the grinder is running. We position equipment to protect nearby landscaping.
- 3
Grind the stump
The grinder works in passes across the stump, cutting down through the wood. We go below ground level — typically several inches deep — so the surface can be graded over.
- 4
Grind exposed surface roots
Major surface roots close to the stump get ground down as part of the standard job. Deep lateral roots further out in the lawn are not included unless discussed upfront.
- 5
Rake and level the grindings
We rake the wood chip mulch back into the hole. You can leave it to decompose, add topsoil and seed over it, or haul it away — we'll tell you what makes sense.
What's included
- Full grinding of the stump to several inches below ground level
- Grinding of major surface roots immediately adjacent to the stump
- Raking wood chip grindings back into the hole
- Site cleanup and removal of rocks or debris cleared before grinding
What's not included
- Hauling away the wood chip grindings — they stay unless you pay for removal
- Topsoil, sod, or grass seed to fill and restore the area after grinding
- Grinding of lateral roots that extend more than a few feet from the stump base
Real Situations
Common Scenarios in Columbia
A homeowner in Columbia had a tree removed two years ago and the stump has been in the lawn since, sprouting small shoots every spring.
We grind the stump below grade and cut through enough of the root collar to stop the sprouting. We can't guarantee every root stops producing shoots, but getting below the crown of the root system handles most of it.
A family wants to install a fence along their property line but an old stump sits right in the fence path.
We grind the stump and any surface roots in the fence line deep enough that the fence posts can be set without hitting wood. We coordinate timing so the fence contractor has a clear path.
A homeowner has four stumps of different sizes scattered across their backyard from previous tree work.
We quote all four together. Doing multiple stumps in one visit is more efficient, and that usually works in the homeowner's favor on price. We handle each stump individually based on its size and depth.
Columbia Context
Why this matters in Columbia
Columbia's older neighborhoods have a lot of stumps left from elm trees that died decades ago and from the silver maples that got taken down as they aged out. Clay soil here holds moisture, which actually slows natural decomposition — stumps that might break down in five years in drier climates can sit solid for fifteen or more in mid-Missouri. Grinding is the practical solution when you actually want to use the space.
Straight Talk
About pricing & scope
Stump size, wood hardness, and how many surface roots are involved all affect how long the job takes and what it costs. Hardwoods like oak take longer to grind than softer species. If there are large lateral roots running through the lawn that you want addressed, tell us before we quote — that changes the scope.
